Nov 10, 2008 Stephanie Jolly

Dips and spreads are the perfect party appetizers as they are quick, easy and inexpensive. These dip recipes can be made in minutes using sour cream or cream cheese.

Prepackaged dip mixes are expensive and little more than a customized blend of seasonings and spices. The dried herbs and spices used in these easy party dip recipes can be mixed in bulk and stored for up to six months, or they can be blended with sour cream or cream cheese immediately for a quick party appetizer.

Easy Ranch Dip and Dressing Recipe

This all-around favorite dip is a party staple. Serve with a variety of sliced vegetables, including carrots, radishes, cucumbers, celery and cherry tomatoes in the summer, or with chips and hot-wings during football season. If fresh or dried chives are unavailable, substitute with an equal quantity of dried parsley.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 3/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp fresh or dried chives
  • 1/4 tsp dried parsley
  • 1/4 tsp cracked black pepper
  • 1/2 cup sour cream

Combine dry ingredients first, before mixing into the sour cream. This dip is ready to serve immediately after mixing, though it can also be prepared the day before and refrigerated until needed. Makes 1/2 cup.

Yogurt Dill Veggie Dip

This cool and refreshing vegetable dip is perfect for serving with a vegetable platter. It can also served along side marinated chicken breast skewers or smoked salmon.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tsp dried dill weed
  • 1 tsp onion flakes
  • 1/2 tsp parsley
  • 1/2 tsp celery salt
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt

Combine dry ingredients first before stirring into the sour cream and yogurt. Refrigerate for two hours or overnight to soften onion flakes and allow flavors to marinate. Makes 1/2 cup.

Fiesta Cream Cheese Spread

For some south-of-the-border flavor, this fiesta cream cheese spread can't be beat. Dried chipotle pepper brings out a hint of smoky spice in this hot, flavorful spread. For extra smoke flavor, smoked Hungarian paprika can be substituted for sweet paprika. Serve with crackers or mini toasts.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp dried or fresh chives
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp parsley
  • 1/2 tsp onion flakes
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp ground chipotle powder
  • 4 oz cream cheese
  • 2 Tbsp sour cream (optional)

Combine all dried ingredients before mixing into cream cheese. The optional sour cream can be added to achieve a smoother consistency for easy spreading. Refrigerate two hours or overnight before serving.

Party hosts looking to save money by creating their own dip mixes will love these party appetizer ideas. Whether serving a quick snack to a group of friends or preparing some late minute party appetizers, these dips are sure to be a hit with all ages.

Stephanie Jolly :
The sour cream ranch recipe above is for 1/2 cup of dip. If you'd like more, the ranch recipe scales easily. Just double or quadruple the ingredients if you'd like to make a full cup or use a full 16 oz container.
