Chocolate Nut Drop Cookie Recipe

A festive treat for your holiday Christmas cookie jar.

Everyone loves chocolate cookies and these festive delights with their snowy frosting are sure to become a family favorite at Christmas or anytime!

Chocolate Nut Drop Cookie Recipe

Makes about 40 cookies

Preheat oven to 400 degrees

Ingredients:

  • 2 squares of unsweetened chocolate
  • 1 3/4 cups of sifted flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 3/4 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1/3 cup milk

Directions:

  1. Melt the unsweetened chocolate in a double boiler or saucepan.
  2. Sift together the flour, baking powder and salt.
  3. Cream the butter and slowly beat in the sugar. Hint: Allow the butter to come to room temperature before creaming. Blend the butter and sugar well. Beat in the egg thoroughly.
  4. Stir the melted chocolate into the creamed butter and add the vanilla and chopped nuts.
  5. Add the sifted dry ingredients alternately with the milk, adding a little at a time. Stir until the cookie batter is well mixed.
  6. Carefully drop by teaspoons on a greased cookie sheet about 2 inches apart.
  7. Bake the cookies for 8 to 10 minutes. Since oven temperatures differ, be sure to check the cookies after 7 minutes.
  8. Cool the cookies completely on a wire rack before frosting.

Snowy Frosting Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of confectioners sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of milk
  • Walnut halves

Directions:

  1. Measure the confectioners sugar into a small bowl.
  2. Stir in about 1 tablespoon of milk, or just enough to make the frosting easy to spread and allows the walnut meat to stick to the cookie.
  3. Beat the entire mixture well.
  4. Use a spatula to cover each cookie with a small amount of frosting.
  5. Top each cookie with a walnut meat half.

These chocolate cookies have an almost cake-like texture and are perfect for every special occasion. They are a rich treat, but not overly sweet. Chocolate nut drop cookies make a great addition to your Christmas cookie jar, but are also a nice touch for afternoon tea at anytime during the year. You can also add a sprinkle of red or green colored sugar for an added holiday touch to the snowy frosting. A doily covered plate of these chocolate gems are a super Hostess gift at Christmas or as a thank you on a weekend get-to-gether with friends. Mom always said to never go visiting with empty hands and she was right!
