Keep These Delicious Sandwiches Warm in the Crock Pot

Feb 24, 2008 Carrie Grosvenor

A slow cooker and some tin foil are all that any party host needs to keep these portable, tasty sandwiches hot and ready to serve.

Looking for tasty, hearty, and easy sandwich recipes to feed a hungry crowd? Look no further! This is one sandwich that is served hot and ready for a slew of party guests. From a tailgate party to a child's sleepover party, these are perfect fare. Ham and cheese have wide-spread appeal, and the added veggies give them a nutritional and flavorful boost.

The technique used for these sandwiches can carry over to almost any kind of warm or hot sandwich recipe. From pizza or meatball subs to hot roast beef or even burgers and chili dogs, wrapping the finished sandwiches in foil and keeping them warm in the crockpot makes party food simple. The sandwiches are ready to eat when guests are hungry, so there's lots of wiggle room for people to eat at different times.

Also, if these sandwiches are being served during or after a sporting event, it's really easy to keep them hot if the game goes into overtime, or if half-time doesn't occur when expected. Or for an open-house style party, guests can serve themselves whenever they arrive.

Condiments such as mustard, ketchup, pickles, or relish can be added to the sandwiches before they're wrapped in foil, but others like lettuce, tomatoes, mayonnaise, or any kind of creamy dressing should be placed in bowls and left out for guests to add themselves when they are ready to eat. Other toppings to serve on the sandwiches or on the side could include sliced olives, thinly sliced onions, barbeque sauce, or chili sauce.

Finally, feel free to swap out ingredients and add or exchange things for ingredients that appeal more to individual tastes. Add more cheese, use different deli meats, skip the veggies - it's almost impossible to go wrong with this recipe!

Hot Ham and Cheese Sandwiches Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 8-10 small, crusty rolls
  • 24-30 slices deli Black Forest ham
  • 8-10 thin slices swiss cheese (or use mozzarella or cheddar)
  • 1 green bell pepper, seeded and sliced into thin strips
  • 1 red bell pepper, seeded and sliced into thin strips
  • 12 button mushrooms, washed, patted dry, and thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons butter or cooking oil
  • condiments such as mustard, sliced pickles, or thinly sliced onions (optional)
  • Aluminum foil

Put it All Together:

  1. In a large skillet or frying pan, melt butter over medium heat (or heat cooking oil). Add sliced bell peppers and mushrooms and cooking, stirring and turning often, until crisp-tender - about 3-4 minutes. Remove veggies from skillet and set aside.
  2. Split rolls in half horizontally. Rolls may be buttered if desired. Place three slices ham, one slice cheese, and a generous scoop of the prepared veggies on each roll bottom. Place the roll tops on top of the sandwich and press down lightly.
  3. Wrap each sandwich individually in aluminum foil.
  4. Stack sandwiches in a crock pot or slow cooker, and turn the heat to low. Cover and cook for about two hours. Serve hot, straight from the slow cooker.

Sandwiches can be kept warm on the "low" or "warm" settings for several hours.

Makes 8-10 sandwiches.
